Boxing drills at home that give you something to check
Solo boxing drills work best when each round has one visible focus and a re-test: for example, return to guard, straight path, or cleaner recovery. A phone can help you review visible movement, but not power, contact, or fight performance.
Set up
- Enough room to throw without hitting furniture
- Full body visible if you film
- Short rounds — quality over duration
- One clear focus at a time
1. Jab out-and-back / return-to-guard
Instructions: Throw 10 jabs at an easy pace. After each jab, the lead hand must return to the cheek before the next jab starts. Rear hand stays high.
Visible success criterion: On film, the lead hand comes home on roughly the same line it left — it does not hang out at full extension.
Instruction-only tip (not a measured score): Think “snap home,” not “push and admire.”
Next: film 5 reps side-on, or open the jab form checklist.
2. Cross straight-path / recovery
Instructions: Throw 8 crosses. Watch whether the fist travels on a straight screen-plane path and whether you recover to a usable guard afterward.
Visible success criterion: The punching hand does not loop wide on camera, and both hands are near the face before you reset for the next rep.
Instruction-only tip: Feel the rear side turn with the shot — but do not treat “perfect hip yaw” as something a phone verified.
Next: compare two clips, or read the cross path guide.
3. Hook bend-and-return / visible path
Instructions: Throw 8 lead hooks slowly. Keep a bent-arm shape on camera and return both hands to the cheeks.
Visible success criterion: The elbow does not lead the fist into a slap shape, and the opposite hand stays up through the arc.
Instruction-only tip: Short arc, not a wind-up that lifts the chin.
Next: check the hook bend checklist.
How to self-check with a phone
Use shadowboxing feedback with a phone, follow camera setup, and stay inside what a phone camera cannot measure.
How Form Fighter fits
Form Fighter can name one visible correction from live practice or an upload, run a corrective set, and let you re-test in the same session. That matches this drill standard: one focus, then proof on the next reps.
Safety
Form Fighter is a training aid. Scores are estimates from a phone camera and can be wrong — especially with poor lighting, framing, or angle. Warm up, clear space, and stop if something hurts. It does not diagnose injury or replace a qualified coach.
How do I practice boxing alone without a bag?
Use short rounds with one visible success criterion — for example, hand returns to cheek before the next jab — then film a re-test. Busy free shadowboxing without a standard grooves leaks.
Can these drills replace a coach?
No. They help you notice and practice visible solo mechanics between classes. They do not replace pads, sparring, or in-person coaching.
